Cruise Ship Review - Celebrity Cruises Eclipse

 I am writing this review while on my return flight to the U.S., having just spent the past two weeks (14 nights) aboard the Celebrity Eclipse. Launched in April of 2010, the Eclipse joins Celebrity's award-winning family of "Solstice-class" ships, which currently includes the Celebrity Solstice, the Equinox and, in 2011, will also include the Silhouette. So, although I will try to maintain complete objectivity, I must admit that I boarded the Eclipse with very high expectations. Fortunately, with only minor exceptions (as later noted), I was not disappointed.

The "Hardware"

When discussing the physical attributes of a cruise ship (i.e., it's layout and appearance), industry professionals often refer to the ship's "hardware". So, let's start there.

At 122,000 tons (the largest in the Celebrity fleet), the Eclipse was surprisingly easy to get around on and, even with a full capacity of 2,850 passengers (based on double occupancy), the ship never felt crowded. To be perfectly honest, my first impression of the interior d?cor was that it was a bit "plain" but, as the days onboard passed, I came to appreciate it more and more. Consistent with Celebrity's position in the industry as a "premium" cruise line (as distinguished from "mass market" or "luxury"), the overall look and "feel" of the Eclipse is what I would describe as "subdued elegance". Unlike the "cheap glitz" or "pretentious opulence" of some other ships I've seen, the interior of the Eclipse seemed to be intentionally understated by its designers so that guests (myself included) would feel completely at ease while residing in their upscale home at sea. Colors in the main lobby area were soft and light, while other public areas and lounges (including Michael's Club and Cellar Masters) were adorned in deep natural wood tones with luxurious furnishings and plush carpeting.

Hallways and stairways were sufficiently wide for side-by-side passage of guests and we rarely had to wait more than a minute or two for an elevator. The public bathrooms were immaculate and they were always well-stocked with small single-use cloth towels (rather than paper or hot air dryers).

The pool and solarium areas were spacious enough that finding a comfortable lounge chair was never a problem. However, the jogging track (or "walking path" for those of us over the age of 60) went right through the pool lounging area (so it became something of an "obstacle course") and it didn't go completely around the entire ship.

Perhaps the most unique feature of the ship's "hardware" was the "Lawn Club". I must admit that a negative pre-conceived notion (based on photos and descriptions that I saw) may have clouded my expectation. But, after spending just a few minutes watching fellow passengers playing croquet or basking in the sun on the finely manicured natural grass, I realized that the photographs of this area in Celebrity's brochures and television commercials could not capture it's peaceful serenity. I loved it!

The Food

Since all restaurants offer a variety of culinary choices, any evaluation of food is influenced not only by personal taste but also by what items are selected from the menu. Nowhere was this more apparent than at the Murano specialty restaurant aboard the Eclipse. My wife ordered the filet mignon while my cousin, Mike, had the veal chop. Both entrees were, unquestionably, the best of their kind we've ever tasted....anywhere! On the other hand, the fish (Mediterranean sea bass) that my cousin's girlfriend, Janet, and I both ordered was fair at best.

More consistent was the meal we had in the specialty restaurant, Tuscan Grille. Although the filet mignon was quite as good (in our opinion) as in Murano (even though the Tuscan Grille touts itself as being "a steak house with an Italian flair"), all of our entrees were excellent in their own way.

At the specialty restaurant, Quisine, we had a lot of laughs sampling a wide variety of unique entrees and side dishes, each described on an I-pod menu.

The main dining room, Moonlight Sonata, offered a variety of dishes every night that ranged from good to excellent, with very few disappointments. We especially liked the Select Dining option which was a nice departure from the regimented two-seating arrangement on most traditional cruise ships. And, we were always able to get a table for four by the window as we requested.

The Service

A cruise passenger's perception of onboard service is so often dependent upon who their stateroom attendant was and which waiters / waitresses served their meals. So, at best, any evaluation of service should be taken only as a generalization based on limited individual experiences while onboard.

Having prefaced this part of my review (to "cover my tail" in case the reader has a different experience), let me say that my wife and I found the service to be superb. Our stateroom attendants (Violetta Rodriguez and David Campbell) were the best team we've had on any cruise (and we've taken many cruises). The dining staff was competent and professional in all restaurants. In addition, there were some nice little "extra touches", such as greeting you back onboard with a complimentary welcome-back soft drink and a "spritz" of cool spray after a long day of shore excursions. However, one of the things that I most appreciated was the judicious use of public announcements. Following the captain's positioning and weather update each morning, the public address system was virtually silent the remainder of the day. There were no blaring announcements about the next round of jackpot bingo or special "deals" on jewelry. If you were interested in such things, the time and place of all onboard activities and events were clearly shown in the daily calendar that was left in the stateroom the preceding night. Having learned to read when I was in 1st grade, I didn't miss the annoying announcements one bit.

The Entertainment

If there was one area in which my experience aboard the Celebrity Eclipse disappointed me (and my traveling companions), it was the entertainment. More specifically, the Broadway-style production shows (which I have seen countless times before on other cruise ships) were fair at best and totally uninspired at worst. That's not to say that the individual performers were not talented (although I've seen better). It's only to say that I found these "song and dance" shows to be "corny", repetitive and, in certain respects, slightly amateurish. The exception to this was the last show (titled "Eclipse"), which featured some terrific acrobatic performances and great sets with special effects. The variety shows (jugglers, magicians, comedians, etc.) were generally good.

The highly-promoted glass blowing exhibition was, in my opinion, slow-moving and dull. Although the presenters from the Corning glass museum were obviously very skilled at their craft and dedicated to their work, I just couldn't get too excited about spending nearly an hour watching a glass bowl being made. In fact, at one point during the exhibition, my wife turned to me and said "What am I missing?". Ironically, this same exhibition was highly recommended to us by one of our staff members who saw it on the Solstice. So, don't take my word for it. See for yourself.

The Staterooms

Like every modern cruise ship, the Celebrity Eclipse offers a wide variety of accommodations, ranging from lower-priced interior cabins (with no window) to huge luxury suites with personal butlers. Obviously, a guest staying in one of the large suites would have a different stateroom experience than one staying in a much smaller interior cabin so, once again, I must preface my stateroom review by cautioning the reader that it is based on my specific experience (which may or may not hold true for other types of accommodations on the Eclipse).

My wife and I chose (as we most often do) a standard mid-priced stateroom with a balcony, which was more than adequate for the two of us. The d?cor was soft and pleasing. The bedding was very comfortable and neither of us had any difficulty falling asleep. The bathroom was a nice size but the shower did not have a hand-held extension (which meant you had to move your body around a bit to get yourself all rinsed off). There was somewhat less storage space than we would have liked on a 14-night cruise but, overall, we were very satisfied with our standard balcony stateroom accommodations.

Conclusion

Having taking well over 30 cruises over the past 15 years that we've been in the business, my wife and I are always looking for something special when a new cruise ship enters the market. And, that's exactly what we got with the Celebrity Eclipse. On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the unattainable standard of being absolutely perfect in every respect), we give this one an overall rating of 8.5 to 9. Taking a cruise to the Bahamas in a Carnival cruise ship

Because it is my first post I guess ILL speaks about my recent cruise to the Bahamas. This was really my third cruise and my wife and I have already booked our room, coming from Miami to Key West, Nassau and Cococay. Our first cruise was Carnival Fantasy to Nassau. It was in November 2000. We were married in which cruise and had a party for 45 more or less with us! I have enjoyed most cruisers as it was our first, but when you have many people with you, time flies! I remember dinners to be pretty decent, but the buffet was very well, as I have had the same experience in each of our cruises. This was my first trip to the Bahamas and thought that the continent was quite dirty and taking a cab ride felt they were risking their life. Paradise Island was nice though and Atlantis Resort was amazing! Remembrance sea was also quite harsh on our way back and the boat was rocking enough back and forth. It is not a real feeling comfortable. But, nevertheless, it was a short but pleasant trip, and had decided that it would again.

That leads to our second cruise. This was on the Carnival fascination. I think that trip in March 2005 or 2006, was not sure. It was a night 4 cruises. Left us the port of Miami and traveled to Key West and playa del Carmen. I loved to Key West. I liked the old man, location historical aspect and was clean and pleasant. The atmosphere was easy to go and did not feel that he was going to be hit by a taxi or stolen by the locals, as you can feel if you leave the route beaten in Nassau or Mexico. ID live in key West if I had the opportunity! Once more the food at dinner was decent, and I suppose the dressers were ok. I've heard this from many people but I guess you can expect some of the services or food to be less stellar when its only paying $ 300 to 400 per person for a night of 4 cruises. I've had many people say that food was much better in a more recent top class cruise ship. In any case, our next stop was in Playa del Carmen and because a recent hurricane had damaged the docks we had to stop at another port South of there, with no city. Had the port, and that's it. So we had to rent a jeep and drive North to 20 minutes to beach. Looking back, was very stupid. Taking into account especially cries happening now in Mexico, but even then there were many problems. Led us in some areas that seemed to Iraq or something! Very poor and probably not very secure. If you are taking a cruise anywhere outside of this country is very careful about where you decide to go and how you decide to get there. Once in Playa del Carmen while seemed quite nice and tell were putting money in the area to boost tourism. My friend had a massage while my wife and his girlfriend bought and I had a few crowns and some tacos by the beach. It was nice for a few hours, at least until the rear of the unit. I remember passing by Cuba on the way back to Miami and thought that was pretty interesting. Everything was a very pleasant trip and of course all ship's personnel were great because they are almost always. No service can beat price when it comes to a cruise.

Our last trip was just three weeks ago. We had a free to use cruise and we have booked again another three night trip to the Bahamas. It was in the 2010 Halloween Carnival imagination. We knew quite what to expect, now, since this is our third trip. I wanted to mention that I think that Nassau had been cleaned a little since the last time I was there. This was brought to my attention by someone by what I didn't know what to expect, ten years had passed since the last we were there. Cab drivers are still mad. (And anyone who rent a moped to drive around the island the way people drive there, could have a screw or two losing also!) only joking, although it does not do so. Everything about Nassau was rather ho hum, have been there before. We were about 10 or 15 friends with us on this trip, so it was a great moment! Launched a Halloween party and already do all clothing of apparently and laughed all the others. Food of course average age, I am really tending all my praise for some really good food! I had a night to BBQ ribs and they were really good.

Finally, as I said, we had only booked another cruise to April 2011. This is located in Royal Caribbean, Majesty of the seas. I've heard that his very nice along with all Carnival Cruises have taken, but it would be nice to enjoy a different line and slightly larger ship. Well back to Nassau I could care less, but also to Cayo Hueso, which I love and Cococay RCCL owned. I know that they charge for almost everything on the island, so if you go there educate yourself first. However, Im wishing to leave another.

Review of NCL America x 7 Hawaiian pride cruise

My first impression of the Pride of America was "this is great, we obtain Champagne only walking on board". It was quite cold. I am a large cruise ship enthusiast, and while it's a fairly standard service, gets me every time. Think, we stayed in one of the suites on the cover of 1100 and was beautiful, he is expected over the sea and its own balcony, as well as your own Butler. We could put in contact with our Butler at all times (he had his own telephone). The first night was in Honolulu, and we sailed throughout the night until we arrived in Maui. The area which was docked at was Kahului and in-kind was an industrial area, but it was only a ferry away (one free).

That night we ate at the restaurant horizon and managed to meet hero and James. Were our servers and they were fantastic! So charming and well above things. They were our week servers for a long time and really made the difference to the ship. Unfortunately, a night that we had... Joseph as our server and to be honest, was simply rude. Service aboard the ship actually varies. Some are great and some are absolutely atrocious. Sunday night was a night on Maui, and the Monday night we sailed to the thread, which was so well. Did not believe that a large part of it, only rain and cloudy all day long. On Wednesday we arrived in Kona, which, to be on the same island as Hilo, was charming! As precious, throughout the area around where us trailer was beautiful and very picturesque. Thursday was my favorite of all Kauai. We had heard so much about James Kalalau (our wonderful servant) track, and since we are avid hikers, gave a whirlwind. SO beautiful, absolutely breath taking. Kauai was one overnight, so leave the clock around 5 or Friday, sail to Honolulu.

In general the cruise was great... drinks were all a little more price, but what you think. I would highly suggest the Pride of America 7 day cruise to someone who is thinking. The landscape of Hawaii is unrealistically too wonderful it would be a huge mistake to lose.

A cruise more Pimped! -How I Learned to Love Long Lines, open my Get & portfolio with the programme of

 The Setup - Although veterans of many cruises, we had never had the "Drive Port" experience. Just throwing everything but the dog into the SUV - bypassing the hassle and inconvenience of airports, airlines and transfers - seemed like a good idea. From Memphis the logical choice was Carnival's Triumph sailing to the Eastern Caribbean out of New Orleans. (7 days-July 24 to 31)

Embarkation - Docs we printed out online indicated boarding was from 12:30p to 2:30p with ship sailing at 4:00pm. So, we got in line for pier-side unloading and parking at 12:20p. Once parked and out of the SUV we stood in line for about 45 minutes - outdoors - in 95 degree mid-summer New Orleans heat and humidity. (What logistical genius arranged for that little bit of torture?) From parking to boarding the ship took a total of 80 minutes - during which long lines with many switch backs were the norm.

We were told at the parking/unloading point that, yes, we could schlep our own bags aboard if so inclined. But, just before entering the blessedly air conditioned terminal building, we were singled out from the herd by Colonel Klink and told that three of our bags were oversized and must be checked. He pointed to a little airline type "carry-on-bags-must-fit-in-here-or-we-stab-your-mother" warning sign with size testing receptacle, the volume of which was just big enough to hold a medium sized lunch box. I'm thinking, "they have overhead bins on cruise ships now? So why wasn't that sign positioned back at the unloading point?"

Accommodations - Once on board we were directed to our ocean view cabins on Deck One. The cabins were very spacious and quite comfortable - larger than on most ships - something for which Carnival is noted. Our decision not to splurge on balcony cabins was justified. Overall ambiance of the ship seemed spacious.

Our room steward was Jorge from Peru - a very gracious man who seemed eager to please - as did most of the staff.

Waiting in our cabins were bon voyage gifts from the Hotel Manager and our local Business Development Manager, fruit baskets, wine, etc. They were greatly appreciated and quickly consumed.

Departure - Noticing at 5pm that the gangway had been retracted but we had not yet sailed, an announcement by the captain explained that due to weather - tropical depression Bonnie - and heavy traffic at the river's mouth, sailing would be delayed until 3am Sunday morning. But, we were reassured that the ship would still reach ports on time. And it did.

Dining - Even though we had officially requested a large table for eight or more, we were seated in a booth for four. The booth was comfortable and cozy, but this was still a disappointment for us - we cruise to meet people. The maitre 'd was apologetic and said he'd try to remedy the situation, but did not. Understandably, most people want tables reserved for just their group of family and friends, especially during the summer months when traveling with kids. My theory? They probably originally had us booked for a large table...then they saw me tripping and stumbling my way up the gangway sporting a lime green Vampires Suck! ?tank top with "Bite Me" tattooed over my jugular. I'm sure they decided then and there that it was best to isolate us from the other diners.

The food ranged from average to very, very good. The biggest improvement to Carnival's food service is in the presentation. Main dining room offerings were stylish and gourmet in appearance. However, in actual taste most dishes were about a half star short of deserving of that sobriquet. Some exceptions: the Chilled Avocado Soup, Mongolian Steak Salad, New Zealand Lamb Chops and the Chocolate Souffle were to die for.

Fish dishes, while well spiced and elegantly presented, were consistently served dry and overcooked. Thinking that it might be due to only frozen supplies being available rather than fresh, I embarked on a test. When the security guard at the Atlantis Aquarium was looking the other way I scooped up a rare Triggerfish...smuggled it back in my camera case...gave it to ship's chef fifteen minutes before dinner. Yep, served dry and overcooked.

Just when I was about to give up on the Over-Cooked Fish issue, a ray of hope appeared. There on deck five...just around the corner from the casino...the Sushi Cart! But even here the delicacies are tweaked for southern tastes. The Chicken Fried Tuna'Cado Rolls were fabulous!

Entertainment - We took in most of the shows and most were quite good, especially the big production shows. Carnival is one of the few remaining cruise lines to still utilize full live orchestras rather than recorded tracks for these complex shows. Sound quality in all venues was excellent. Stage effects and mechanics, such as hydraulically manipulated stage sections and (nearly invisible) cable lifts enabling performers to "fly" were effective and not overly exploited. Site lines in all venues were good. Smoke machines, flash pots and laser strobes were used sparingly and not overdone. Well, maybe the smoke machine didn't add much to bingo...the caller was new and couldn't find the off button.

The Big Easy Show was one of the best production shows I've seen on a cruise ship...and this coming from someone who worked ships as an entertainer for 12 years. Clearly crafted for a predominantly New Orleans centric audience, my first thought was "this is a cheap shot - like playing the Star Spangled Banner at a VFW meeting - a guaranteed standing ovation." But as the show unfolded the choice of music, the performances, costuming and special effects were outstanding. A very enjoyable experience.

Comedian - Todd Justice started out strong but began to lose us half way thru the show. Todd kept looking at his watch - a surefire momentum killer. Not a good idea unless it is part of the act. It was not.

Magic - A big production/illusion type magic show in the main showroom was a bit repetitive and just ok. A close-up magic show was scheduled for the Venezia Lounge. Although we arrived 20 minutes early there was not an empty seat to be found. It was already standing room only and many were sitting on the floor. This show needs to be in a larger venue. We did not stay.

Specialty Act - Funniest show of the week was Asad, the stage hypnotist. To audience volunteers who were deep under, he gave many of the old tried and true but still funny suggestions with a few novel twists such as..."you desperately want to kiss the person next to you but they have horribly bad breath".

Asad had a very original closing. Just before dismissing the volunteers he gave them one final suggestion..."you will not remember anything you have done on stage tonight...until the next time you look in a mirror. Then you will suddenly remember everything in vivid detail." Of course immediately following the show sadistic friends and family steered unsuspecting volunteers into the restrooms to "powder their noses". Screams could be heard three decks away.

On-Board Ambiance - With beautiful ships, good food and staff eager to please, Carnival is still all about relentless on-board merchandising and sales promotion - as are all cruise lines in the mass market category. The trade-off is lower fares.

But Carnival can be a bit crass about it sometimes. You don't have to be a cruise snob to feel a bit put out when, for the umpteenth time, you have to walk the length of the ship to find an unblocked stairway or un-mobbed elevator to get from one deck to another due to photographers having set up another half dozen Photo Op stations.

These always seemed to be positioned in the middle of a major staircase or thoroughfare during peak stroll-about-the-ship hours. One night about twelve such setups were in evidence, all at choke points with correspondingly backed up crowds spilling over into on-board shops...where silver tongued sales people lay in wait!

(Biz Op - Someone could make a fortune selling Photographer Repellant. It could be spray-on...colorless and odorless but making the wearer appear constantly out of focus.)

Also consider that for the two hours prior to departing from Key West, passengers had to stand in line for an average of 30 minutes to get back aboard the ship...and you begin to get my point.

Why can't CCL take a cue from the good people at Disney? Disney has mastered both in-your-face merchandising and crowd control. Carnival execs, are you listening? Can you say Fastpass?

Ports & Shore Excursions - there were three stops on this itinerary.

Freeport - There is a reason why it is called "Freeport". It is totally free of anything to do. Beaches and shopping are a long cab ride from the ship and nothing to write home about once you get there. We stayed on the ship.

Nassau - One mistake that we can only blame on our own procrastination - not buying tickets in advance to the Atlantis Aquarium & Water Park on Nassau's Paradise Island. Unfortunately, we waited until the day of arrival and everywhere we went, the Shore Excursion Desk, the Atlantis hotel itself, other nearby Paradise Island hotels - the story was the same - sold out, sold out, sold out.

But our determined girls weren't taking no for answer and gave the go-ahead to our cab driver to do whatever it took to find us Water Park passes.

Tito was the man...a fast talking and (apparently) connected guy. With a grin a mile wide, a mouth full of gold teeth and a cranked up boom box with sub-woofer in the back of his Toyota mini-van, he was an instant hit with our 18-year olds. Meanwhile, I'm testing the van doors to make sure they can be locked and unlocked from the inside.

To add to my nervousness, while careening thru the backstreets of Nassau in Oddjob's sub-woofed ride, my wife is flashing around hundreds of dollars in cash - slowly counting it all out - right there in the open for all to see - making sure we had enough to pay for these bootleg water park passes he is about to score for us. (Tito made it clear he didn't take plastic.)

Meanwhile, I'm about to panic thinking "My God, he's going to pull into a back alley where we'll be stripped naked and robbed of everything...at gun point...and left stranded." (Robbery would be survivable...but I wasn't sufficiently medicated for walking back through the Straw Market...naked.)

After numerous furtive phone calls and a back alley rendezvous with local underground operatives, we had the passes...and Tito had our cash. Miraculously, we did not set off any fraud alarms at the entrance to the Aquarium / Water Park.

Key West - Arrival here meant more shopping, as well as cheap or free Internet and cell phone connectivity. You can connect via the ship's system but it is a costly way to feed your Facebook habit.

We booked the parasailing excursion, which was a hoot. The departure point is just a short walk across the pier from the ship.

Sea Days - We enjoyed our time on deck, the pools, water slide and the JumboTron (giant outdoor video screen). Yes, Agnes, yours truly got in line with the kids and went down the giant water slide. It was a thrill. Especially the sudden stop in the water trough at the bottom. I was regular for three days afterward.

Question - Who gets to decide what is shown on the ship's huge JumboTron? Sometimes it featured commercials for Carnival or playbacks of highbrow fare such as the Hairy Chest Contest - sometimes a movie or concert video - but each and every morning it was tuned to a local TV station out of Denver. (Denver?) I kept looking around for a giant remote control.

The Spa - On the last day of the cruise my wife booked me for the ultimate makeover - a hydrating facial with full body massage. Admittedly, it did make me look a good six to eight weeks younger for a few hours. But, like the poor victims of the hypnotist, when I looked in the mirror the next morning...there staring back at me was that familiar 63-year old catcher's mitt with ears. I screamed too.

Conclusion - All in all it was a good cruise and a welcome change of pace. Would I cruise on Carnival again? Yes, definitely. Would I do anything differently next time? Yes, a couple of things. First, I'd insist on getting that large table for eight or more in the dining room - we just have too much fun swapping lies with new people we will never see again. Secondly, I'd make sure to book the two or three most desired shore excursions in advance. And lastly, we need to rein in our on-board profligacy a bit. Oh, I'd also bring along a case of that Photographer Repellant. - LEC
